We've had a bit of a rough time the past couple days. On Thursday we saw a children's orthopedic specialist to follow up on the finding of the pediatrician in the hospital who said Lillian had hip dysplasia in her left hip. Basically, her hip pops in and out and if not corrected, could cause problems with walking, arthritis or even hip replacement at a young age. So the specialist confirmed that she does have hip dysplasia but in both of her hips. They fitted her immediately for a Pavlik Harness which secures her hips in a better position to form correctly. I will admit, it was heartbreaking to hear and see that our 11 day old had this issue and was going to have to wear this harness 24/7 for at least three months. The harness goes from her shoulders down to her feet...all I can say about it is that it sucks!! But we have been assured that she is not in any pain which is most important. It is more of an inconvenience for us...makes diaper changes more difficult for sure! And we can't bathe her so I guess that first bath will come a little later in her life. We are slowly getting used to it and realizing this is what is best for our little girl. We see the specialist every other week for fittings and ultrasounds.
The very next day, we found out that Lillian was down almost a pound from her birth weight...not so good. So we have pretty much been on a feeding frenzy this weekend trying to get her to nurse more (and more effectively). I've also been pumping hoping it will increase my supply. We go back Monday am for another weight check.
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers! We love our little angel and just want her to be well.
This is what happens when dad is left in charge of styling Lillian's hair.
